War Over the Water

Up until the time that I heard a radio program with dentists espousing the so-called benefits of water fluoridation, I never gave it much thought. But during that radio program in the 1970s, what disturbed me the most was the light-hearted discussions regarding a chemical that is one of the most toxic substances on earth. For example, the dentist was asked whether fluoride was poisonous. He casually stated "no, it's only toxic". His response raised my eyebrow for I knew that a toxic substance could be poisonous. In fact, the dentist discussing the benefits of fluoridation even mentioned the fact that if a person didn't like fluoridated water they could boil it. I did remember from my chemistry classes that fluoride did not dissipate upon boiling but rather become concentrated.

This somewhat one-sided and easy flowing presentation of fluoridation prompted me to call the radio station and ask if anybody would speak about this issue with the opposite point of view. Unfortunately there was none. So I, like a fool at the time, went on to the radio to discuss my personal points of view regarding fluoridation. But remember, at that time I knew very little. Most of the material I received from the Public Health Department never waived on the side of caution regarding the toxic affects of fluoride. My baptism of fire came that fateful day when I was confronted by a proponent of fluoridation who called in to that talk show. He frankly outgunned me by probative questions that I had no knowledge of. My only innate response at the time was the basic fundamental feeling that I've always had regarding taking chemicals into our bodies: my underlying unswerving belief that every individual should have the personal right to choose what chemical or drug they put in their body and that the water supplies should not be used as a vehicle to treat us for any diseases including dental disease.

After a lengthy investigation and study of scientific information, which I was surprised to receive from the different anti-fluoridationists that I met along the way, I've come to the conclusion that fluoridation is not totally safe, effective, and will cause us harm. In fact, the evidence is out there for all of us to view. On this web site I will not print every document but defer to a place where you can obtain it. I will however, attempt to give you my "prospective" on the papers that I'm siting.
