Tale of Two Toxins - cont'd

It was on or about the 1960s that the bad reputation of smoking caught up with America's society, especially due to the health craze where people were walking, eating natural food and developing healthier lifestyles. It was at that time that the political movement decided to at least minimally warn the public regarding the possible adverse effects of smoking. Warning labels appeared on the sides of all cigarette packages. We all know what they said, beginning with the Surgeon General of the United States advising people of ill health.

We are well aware of what has happened in the last ten years. Smoking is being condemned, becoming widely discouraged by the public, politicians and health practitioners. Now finally, there are laws to protect innocent people against the effects of second hand smoke.

A coalition of public interest health providers and politicians have created laws to protect innocent people from the harm of having smoke in their environment, that may lead to their physical compromise. Most public places have either separate areas or will in the future be banned from having smoking anywhere in the environment where nonsmokers breathe.

Finally, the secrecy of adverse side effects of nicotine and carbon monoxide that researchers found in the 1950s while they were attempting to make a "better cigarette", is coming back to haunt them. Recently in Florida a jury found the Tobacco Industry liable for not informing the public, at the time of their research, of the catastrophic effects of a lifetime of smoking, namely emphysema and cancer.

By now, you can agree with mostly everything I have said, for it has been well documented, but I am sure you are asking a provoking question, "What does this have to do with fluoridation?" As Paul Harvey says on his radio broadcast, "Here is the rest of the story".
