Fight for Springfield's Water SupplyFluoride Proposal Returns to Springfield In the past thirty years Springfield, which has been rated on of the best water supplies for purity in the country, will address the issue of water fluoridation. In an August 17 Springfield Union News story, Health Director Helen R. Caulton-Harris, who according to the article supports water fluoridation, said that she would raise the issue with the Health Council on September 7, 2000 (since rescheduled to October 12th see below). If it comes to ballot it will be the fourth time. All previous attempts have been defeated. In 1983 Fluoridation was defeated 2 to 1 in Springfield, Chicopee and Agawam Massachusetts. Dr. Stephen Dean, a Springfield chiropractor and President of the Massachusetts Communities for Pure Water, stated that he would share information with the Health Board with the hopes that they will find a voluntary solution to compulsory fluoridation. Meeting on Fluoride Scheduled for October Due to strong public interest, the Public Health Council has scheduled a separate meeting to discuss a proposal to fluoridate the city's water supply. The meeting is planned for October 12th from 3 to 5pm at the Melanie Kasparian Professional Development Building on Alton Street (off State Street, opposite main entrance of Mass Mutual Life Ins. Co.) More fluoridation news around the state... Back to top Back to main news page Mission || In the Beginning || Commentaries || Effects on the Body |
