Chicopee Joins Other Cities in the Bay State Opposing the Fluoridation Mandate Bill

April 5, 2005.

Chicopee MeetingAfter a recommendation by the Health and Safety Committee of Chicopee to oppose mandatory fluoridation, the Chicopee Aldermen voted unanimously for a resolution opposing Senate Bill 122, which will eliminate the current fluoridation law giving the citizens of Massachusetts the right to vote on the fluoridation question. Alderman-at-Large James Tillotson, who personally opposes water fluoridation, stated that this is more of an issue of democracy and the right to vote than it is about fluoridation. Currently, over 300 cities and towns in Massachusetts do not fluoridate their water supply even though the current law permits them to do so. The cities and towns of Springfield, Ludlow, Granby and Grafton have also sent letters to the Save Our Water Committee opposing the fluoridation mandate bill.

Citizens and Community Leaders Attend Annual Save Our Water Committee Meeting

May 17, 2005.

Members of SOW at spring meetingMore than 100 members of the Save Our Water Committee joined with Chicopee Alderman-at-Large James Tillotson and State Representative Sean Curran at the Save Our Water Committee spring meeting at the Holiday Inn in Springfield, Massachusetts. Linda McLaren, Save Our Water Chairperson, reported that she gave testimony with Dr. Dean at several hearings regarding Senate Bill 122, which will eliminate the right to vote on the fluoridation question. She pointed out that the previous week an official from the Hampden County Dental Society testified that 90% of the practicing dentists in Massachusetts did not accept MassHealth patients. She stated that this was the cause of the "oral health crisis", not the lack of fluoride in the water. Linda read a report from the Boston Globe entitled, "The Dental Care Crisis", illustrating that Boston which has been fluoridated for more than 30 years, has one of the highest dental decay rates in Massachusetts.

James Tillotson speaks at SOW spring meetingChicopee Alderman-at-Large James Tillotson told those present that they should mobilize to stop this legislation that would deny them the right to control their water supply.

State Representative Sean Curran stressed the importance of every individual present to call their State legislators asking them to defeat the mandatory fluoridation law.

Dr. Paul Connett, PhD. and Professor of Chemistry at St. Lawrence University, New York, gave a presentation outlining the toxicity of fluoride compounds. He stated that most of the science that proves fluoridation safety was outdated and that new evidence of fluoride's harm could be found on his website, "Fluoride Action Network". The Massachusetts' Committee for Pure Water in recognition of his efforts to prevent toxic chemicals like fluoride being injected into the water supply gave Dr. Connett their "humanitarian" award.

Two Area Health Boards Discuss Fluoridation

Springfield Health Council, Dr. Thomas Manning (standing), Joe Sears (second to the left)After the Springfield City Council voted earlier this month to oppose State House Bill 734, which mandated water fluoridation, the City's Health Board was asked its opinion regarding fluoridation. At its March 16 meeting, the Springfield Health Council took testimony, both pro and con, regarding the fluoridation controversy. Area dentists and a representative from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children testified in favor of water fluoridation. On the other hand, members of the audience who were mostly opponents of fluoridation gave testimony in opposition to water fluoridation.

Roger Williams showing fluoride rinseRoger Williams, a Springfield resident opposing water fluoridation, stated that the cause of dental disease was not the lack of fluoride which is available in toothpaste, mouthwash and dental rinse programs, but sugar. Springfield business woman and registered nurse, Carol Armour, held in her hand a prescription bottle of fluoride stating that 32 ounces of fluoridated water contained the same amount of fluoride as one prescription fluoride tablet and that in her professional opinion, fluoride was a drug that should be controlled by medical professionals. Springfield Save Our Water Chairwoman, Linda McLaren, stated that the cause of the oral health crisis was not the lack of fluoride but the lack of dentists accepting poor patients under Mass Health. She pointed out that 86% of the Bay State's dentists did not treat the poor children for dental disease, even though the ADA considered them victims of the oral health crisis. A dentist present told the audience that they should give up some of their rights for the children. Dr. Dean immediately replied if the dentists would also give up their right to have 100% control of their dental practices by having to be forced to take Mass Health patients. The dentist replied that it would be cost prohibitive due to financial considerations faced by many young dentists.

Carol Armour holding Fluoride pillsAfter requesting scientific information regarding the adverse side effects of fluoridation and receiving it, the Health Council without reviewing the documentation, immediately voted in favor of fluoridation, with one dissenting vote from Councilwoman Josephine Sears. She stated that all citizens should have the freedom of choice.

Linda mclaren and Roger williamsThe following week the Chicopee Health and Safety Committee held a similar hearing, this time the outcome was the complete opposite. After hearing testimony the Committee voted unanimously to support the Chicopee Aldermen in their opposition to the State fluoridation mandate bill that would deny local control of the city's water supply.

Springfield Residents Support Anti-mandate Resolution

Standing room only at Springfield City CouncilThere was standing room only at the Springfield City Council meeting this past Valentine's Day, February 14, to support the City Council's resolution opposing mandatory water fluoridation. Introduced by Dominic Sarno, this resolution asked that the State Legislature delete the mandatory language of an oral health bill that would force every city and town in the Bay State with a population of over 5,000 to fluoridate its drinking water without the benefit of a community vote on the question. Councilman Sarno stated that Springfield has one of the best water supplies in the country, and that if, "it isn't broken do not fix it by adding fluoride chemicals". Councilman Angelo Puppolo stated that the passage of this resolution should send "a clear message" to Beacon Hill that every city wants to retain control over its water supply.

Dr Dean gives public testimony at meetingGiving public testimony at this meeting was Dr. Stephen A. Dean, President of the Communities for Pure Water, who stated that his organization supported oral health but opposed using the water supply to inject fluoride chemicals that have been linked to many health problems and violated a person's right to choose. Chairperson of the Springfield Save Our Water Committee, Linda McLaren, demonstrated that water fluoridation was not absolutely safe by showing the Council and audience that recent fluoride accidents in Marboro and Wakefield, Massachusetts, posed a health risk to their communities. After public testimony was taken, the Springfield City Council unanimously approved this resolution supporting "home rule" and the rights of the citizens to vote on water fluoridation.

Three other cities show concern regarding water fluoridation

The Town of Ludlow Board of Health has expressed its opposition to water fluoridation by sending a letter to a Save Our Water member, Virginia Malachowski. Dr. Bruce Dziura, Chairman, stated that, "I, too, am against fluoridation". And stated that he "would do everything in my power to keep fluoridation out of our water".

Letters also have been received from Granby and Grafton, Massachusetts, the Town of Grafton's Health Agent questioning the effectiveness of water fluoridation stating that Grafton provides fluoride treatments to its school children, and the town of Granby stating that they wish to keep local control of health issues and the fluoridation of their drinking water in the hands of their citizens. Hopefully more cities will contact the State Legislature opposing the proposed mandatory fluoridation oral bill.

Currently the United States has more than 140,000 men and women in Iraq to promote "Operation Iraqi Freedom". As of this date, more than 1300 soldiers have died in order to establish a free democracy centering around the individual Iraqi's right to vote in the January general elections.

It is ironic that the Massachusetts Legislature is considering a bill that abolishes our current law (GL111 Section 8C) that gives the citizens of a Commonwealth the right to vote on water fluoridation.

We need your help to defend our HEALTH FREEDOM. If you are a citizen, contact your legislator and ask them to strike down the mandate language denying you the right to vote on water fluoridation. If you are a member of the media, please research this controversy and report on this important issue. If you are a legislator, please help us strike out the mandatory language and maintain our current law that gives home rule to the cities and towns of Massachusetts regarding their water supply.

Please contact our office if you would like to help us in any way possible.

Springfield Service Organizations Hear the Fluoridation Story

Golden Age ClubThe Save Our Water Committee in August and September had three opportunities to speak to area service organizations regarding the possibility of losing the right to vote on the fluoridation question.

Golden Age Club of Pine Point listens to SOW's presentationApproximately 60 members of the Pine Point branch of the Golden Age Club were given a PowerPoint presentation outlining the Save Our Water Committee of Springfield's objections of adding toxic fluoride waste products to the city's water supply. Dr. Dean, President of the Massachusetts Committee for Pure Water pointed out that voluntary fluoride programs would accomplish the same goals for those citizens wishing their children to have fluoride treatment. Many members of that association expressed concern that their rights to chose would be violated if Massachusetts abolishes the current law allowing cities and towns in the Bay State to vote on the question of adding fluorides to the water supply.

The Springfield Rotary Club and the Springfield Lion's Club also were given the opportunity to hear the fluoridation issue.

Springfield Area Radio Personalities Oppose Water Fluoridation

Good Table RestaurantJohn Walters at Radio Station WMAS AM invited Dr. Stephen Dean to his morning "Food Dude" radio show. Mr. Walters, an avid chef and food connoisseur, broadcast from the Good Table Restaurant in Westfield, Massachusetts. Dr. Dean (left) and John "Food Dude" Walters (right)It was Mr. Walters' opinion that fluoride should remain in toothpaste and not be added to the water supply. He further stated that he realized that cooking with fluoride concentrates this toxic chemical many times.

Area talk show host, Charlie Spencer broadcasting on Saturday mornings stated that he was a strong supporter of children's health, but opposed fluoride compounds that are scraped from industrial smoke stacks being injected into the Springfield water supply. Mr. Spencer, who is a strong environmentalist, supported "freedom of choice" when it comes to an individual's personal health.

Fluoridation Foes Gather

Anti-fluoridists listen to presentationHearing the news that efforts will be made to promote fluoridation state wide in Massachusetts, anti-fluoridationists met at the Holiday Inn on May 16th, 2004, to discuss their response to forced fluoridation. Sponsored by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children, this new initiative entitled " A State of Decay" is a well financed and organized effort to address the oral health crisis in Massachusetts.

Mike Connett speaks on behalf of Fluoride Action NetworkSave Our Water Committee Members gather

Dr. Stephen Dean, DC, President of the Massachusetts Communities For Pure Water stated that while he's not opposed to dental health initiatives he was opposed to mandatory fluoridation (read press statement). He explained that the oral health crisis with children suffering from dental decay was principally caused by the lack of dentists participating in treating the poor through Mass. Health. A legislative study pointed out that only 12% of the 5000 dentists in Massachusetts participate in Mass. Health and that this was a dental care crisis. Many of the pictures depicting children with dental decay, Dean said were of children from the Boston area that has been fluoridated for more than 30 years.

The Save Our Water Committee of Massachusetts is asking all city officials, health departments and citizens to hear all the facts regarding water fluoridation before making it a part of this new legislative initiative.

Longmeadow Citizens Attempt To Remove Water Fluoridation

Dr. KrolAfter several years of injecting sodium fluoride into the Longmeadow water supply, a committee has formed hoping to remove it. The Longmeadow Citizens for Pure Water has attended town meetings and presented arguments outlining their opposition to the town's fluoridation program. Recently, George J. Krol, Ph.D. joined the ranks of the opposition stating that fluorilde is a toxic chemical which interferes with many important functions of the human body. He states in a recent letter to the editor: "I am also concerned about the evidence that fluoride ion inhibits the function of pineal and thyroid glands and binds to and inhibits the activity of important metabolic enzymes and about exceptionally low solubility of aluminum, calcium, and magnesium salts that can contribute to kidney malfunction".

Dr. Krol, who was employed as a chemist for over thirty years in pharmaceutical and medical research joined the committee with the intention of bringing the fluoridation issue to the Longmeadow community asking the citizens to remove fluoride from the water supply. This topic will be discussed at Longmeadow's annual town meeting in April.

Local Fluoridation Author Fights Water Fluoridation Again

Louis Ronsivalli (click for larger pic)For the second time in five years the citizens of Methuen, MA are facing a referendum regarding Water Fluoridation. Louis Ronsivalli, a graduate of Boston University with a degree in Biology and a Masters in Food Science and Nutrition, finds it difficult to understand why the Health Department is pushing Fluoridation again. Methuen defeated Fluoridation in 1997.

Louis, who has written two books opposing Fluoridation states that the “Safe Water Drinking Act” expressly prohibits the addition of any chemical from being put into the water supply that is not designed to make it safe. Fluoride is a toxic chemical that builds up in the body and the public should not be exposed to this waste product though their drinking water.

Louis expects the weeks leading to the election will have many fluoridation ads, which do not mention the Health risks. It is his hope that the public will support "Health Freedom Of Choice” and once again, REJECT FLUORIDATION.

Longmeadow Water Commissioner Questions Safety of Fluoridation

Bruce Randall - Longmeadow Water CommissionerBruce Randall, Longmeadow Water Commissioner, at a recent town meeting hoped to discuss his concerns regarding that town's 16 year fluoridation program. Having a mechanical engineering background from UMass, Commissioner Randall stated that the water supply including the chemicals used in fluoridation could be used in a terrorist attack. He further expressed concern that a recent visit to the pumping station that injects fluoride into the drinking water could easily be the target of a terrorist attack. He said that the sodium fluoride used is in marked bags clearly spelling out the word "POISON" on the label and the powder, in his opinion, looks like anthrax agent. Commissioner Randall feels that after the events of 9/11 the Longmeadow citizens should have a "choice" to discontinue the controversial practice of fluoridation. Cash not Courage

With the defeat of Fluoridation this year in many parts of the country, including Brewster MA, Ithaca NY and Brattleboro VT, the proponents have developed a new strategy -- don't debate. Having over $400,000 (ear-marked for Dental Care), the Worcester Dentists and Health Department have chosen to buy radio ads, full newspaper advertisements and have one-sided presentations rather than let the public hear both sides in a debate. Last year this strategy worked in Las Vegas, NV in a $700,000 campaign.

On October 18th 2001 the proponents presented a "Fluoridation Forum" at Quinsigamond College; the only problem was - they didn't let opponents speak.

Dr. Debra Moore, a member of Worcester Citizens for Total Health (an anti-fluoridation group), invited the proponents to debate a team of International experts on Fluoridation. However, the proponents did not show up for this debate held on Oct. 20th at Clark University.

Dr. Dean, Dr. Connett, Dr. Limeback, Ed LaMothe and Linda McLaren

Dr. Paul Connett speaking against Fluoridation that night said that the tactic of avoiding debates is not new and that the dentists were "chickens" when it came to a scientific discussion on the merits of Fluoridation.

Dr. Connett shows off "chicken tie" Dr. Hardy Limeback BS, PhD ,DDS

Dr. Hardy Limeback Associate Professor and Head of Preventive Dentistry Toronto Canada stated that he taught Fluoridation and supported it until he observed adverse reactions after long term exposure (see his reasons at www.fluoridealert.org).

Prof. Myron J. Coplan retired VP of Albany Internat'l and Principal of IntellequityRetired Professor Myron Copland told the group that the chemical acid used in Fluoridating 90% of the United States drinking water is a waste product of the phosphate industry and contains arsenic and lead. Professor Copland outlined his research with Dr. Rogers Masters at Dartmouth University demonstrating the relationship of the Fluoride chemical (silicofluorides) and higher blood lead levels in children drinking Fluoridated water in MA. (see below for some links to these reports)

Dr. Paul Connett, PHDDr. Connett expressed the hope that big money, no debates and political endorsements won't overcome the right of the public to have a safe water supply free of toxic industrial wastes.

Dr. Dean is quoted in an article from the Worcester Telegram (temporarily available online):
